Nexon's free-to-play multiplayer online FPS "Combat Arms" just added a new feature called the "Nut Shot," which awards points for shooting males in the nether region. But I asked the game-makers: What if you're playing a female avatar?

During GDC, I met with Min Kim, director of Nexon America, to talk about the company's upcoming titles. We also talked about the new feature in multiplayer online FPS "Combat Arms" called the "Nut Shot," which went live in the game last week. As its name suggests, it allows players to score instant kills for shooting male opponents in the groin area. When said Nut Shot is executed, players will see a large graphic of exploding walnuts as well as a golden squirrel, akin to the golden skull that denotes a head shot.

"When people think first-person shooters, they think 'Counter-Strike' or 'Call of Duty,' so anything else outside of that is like a Bruce Lee clone. [The Nut Shot] was a little joke so we could... be more of a Jackie Chan."

"The reason why we did this, it's actually more strategic than people think," said Kim, laughing. He told me that he thought "Combat Arms" suffers from "the Bruce Lee Phenomenon." "When people think first-person shooters, they think 'Counter-Strike' or 'Call of Duty,' so anything else outside of that is like a Bruce Lee clone," he explained. "[The Nut Shot] was a little joke so we could show people that we wanted to break out and be more of a Jackie Chan. And not to be funny all the time, but to show that we've got other features as well."

But what if you're playing a woman? "Combat Arms" offers two base female characters as well as three female mercenaries (and sex changes) that can be purchased. So are females immune to being shot... down there?

A Nexon rep told me that there are two points on the male body where players can register a one-shot kill -- the head and the nuts -- whereas women only have to worry about headshots at this time.

I asked what this did to balance of the game, since women characters clearly have the advantage. The rep told me, "You can't Nut Shot the female characters, although we are investigating ways to balance this out. Any ideas on what we might call a female version of the Nut Shot?"
